Join Philbrook Museum of Art, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for an educator workshop on using primary resources, museum objects and children’s books, and resources on invention and innovation in the classroom. This educator’s workshop will focus on sharing: - Children’s books published by the National Museum of the American Latino and corresponding free educational resources and teaching tools
- Online classroom resources on intellectual property from USPTO
The books featured are: - “Nuestra América: 30 Inspiring Latinas and Latinos who have Shaped the United States”
- “Nuestras Voces: Paloma's Song for Puerto Rico”
- “Nuestras Voces: On the Homefront with Valentina”
- “Nuestras Voces: Cocuyo Lights the Way”
- “Nuestras Voces: Wishing on a Star With Estrella”
Each book is geared toward upper elementary and middle school readers and comes with companion has corresponding primary resources through the Smithsonian Learning Lab. This free workshop will include: - An introduction to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino, Philbrook Museum of Art, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office
- An overview of each of the books and how they correspond to state standards and curriculum in Social Studies, English and Language Arts.
- Sample history, culture, and science activities for teacher participation, which can also be replicated in the classroom as plug and play stand-alone activities.
- An orientation to using the Smithsonian Learning Lab
- Question and Answer Session
- A resource kit with copies of all the books outlined as well as reproducible handouts for the classroom
This workshop is open to teachers of all grade levels and subject areas; however it may be more beneficial to upper elementary and middle school teachers, librarians, and other educators with a focus in Social Studies, English and Language Arts, ESL/ESOL, Spanish Language, Arts Education, and Science. Food and refreshments will be provided.
