This seminar explores the intersection between psychoanalysis and translation, from Freud's implicit (and non-normative) theory of translation to Jacques Lacan and Bruno Bettelheim's critiques of the Standard Edition's use of Latinate terms to bring Freud closer to the social sciences and Jean Laplanche's study of translation as (potentially therapeutic) "afterwardsness." More specifically, it attempts to formulate a psychoanalytic translation theory adequate to study the particular operations of translations from German to Yiddish or Hebrew. While translation is often figured as movement "across" (for instance across the national boundaries that separate French and German), these are translations that might also be seen as translating "in" or "out," or that involve Jewish feeling and "touch."
