Join us for an enriching evening of songs and historical insights as Dr. Sumangala Damodaran, Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence and Stice Lecturer, takes the stage. Drawing upon extensive research on the Indian People’s Theatre Association, a progressive group of artists integral to the anti-colonial struggle, she will present a musical journey with annotations.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence and Stice Lecturer, Dr. Damodaran brings three decades of teaching experience from Ambedkar University, Delhi, and Delhi University. As a labor economist, her extensive work covers the informal economy, migration, gender, and global value chains. She is also a prolific author in the field of music, with notable publications such as The Radical Impulse: Music and Politics in the IPTA Tradition and the album Songs of Protest. She is a co-founder of the award winning Indian-South African Insurrections ensemble and a large multi-institutional project on music and migration which has resulted in a book, Maps of Sorrow, co-authored with Ari Sitas.

Dr. Damodaran will sing in five languages, showcasing the diverse origins of the movement and its music. Accompanying her on stage are Pritam Ghosal (sarod), Mark Aranha (guitar) and Deepak Castelino (guitar and banjo).

Pritam Ghosal and Deepak Castelino are accomplished performers and members of the celebrated Sufi Ensemble, Chaar Yaar. Mark Aranha is a music scholar and an accomplished guitar player.
