An Ecological History of Modern China: Critiques and Responses Stevan Harrell, Professor Emeritus University of Washington An Ecological History of Modern China tells the story of China’s recent history not as policy and politics, but as the evolution of a social-ecological system, as tradeoffs between economic growth and ecosystem resilience. Members of UW’s China Studies faculty will present their evaluations of the book from different perspectives, and Stevan Harrell will reply. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Stevan Harrell taught China studies, anthropology, and environmental studies at the University of Washington for 43 years, retiring in 2017. He now lives in Bellingham, where he is active in climate and environmental politics. |
