Description | Speaker: Dr. Emma Cotter, Pacific Northwest National Lab
Abstract: In 2023, the University of Washington Applied Physics Lab deployed a small tidal turbine at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Sequim, WA for 4.5 months. The turbine system included an integrated instrumentation system (the Adaptable Monitoring Package) to monitor animals in the vicinity of the turbine. The optical cameras on the AMP captured over 1,000 observations of fish, seal, and seabird interactions with the turbine. Analysis of these data offers insight into how animals behave in the vicinity of the turbine and the risk of collision between an animal and the turbine. The results are placed in context of previous studies of collision risk, and priorities for future work are discussed.
