Join the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) for our Research Speaker Series, where a different faculty member presents their latest research each week. These talks offer students and the broader community the opportunity to explore HCDE research topics such as Human-Centered Design for global and environmental challenges, innovative approaches to social and economic systems, and collaborative research practices. All talks are free and open to the public. OCTOBER 31
Accelerating Research Translation into Design Practice Using Generative AI Many valuable insights embedded in scientific publications are siloed and rarely translated into results that can directly benefit humans. This contributes to the so-called research-practice gaps and impede the diffusion of innovation, undermine evidence-based decision making, and contribute to the disconnect between science and the public. In this talk, I will discuss the research on translational science that my research group has been working on over the past few years. I will present findings on barriers that prevent the successful adoption of research insights into design practice, and introduce AI-powered tools to facilitate translational work. Gary Hsieh is an associate professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering. His research focuses on understanding, designing, and developing motivators that encourage people to communicate and interact in ways that are self- and welfare-improving. His work extends and builds on theories from a number of fields, including psychology, communication and economics. Hsieh's application areas include behavior change, online support and Q&A, and civic and local participation. |
