Description | The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering welcomes Adi Azulay for a special community lecture. UW students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. Learning by Doing is a Core Design Skill In the dynamic landscape of design, experiential learning is not only a pedagogical approach—it emerges as a fundamental skill essential for navigating the intricacies of the design industry. As an educator I weave my professional experience into the flow of classes to create an immersive learning environment using learning by doing as a core methodology. This practice builds grit and resilience in students and prepares them to confront real world challenges and ambiguous situations. In this interactive lecture, I will delve into the academic merits of learning by doing as well as the application of those skills in the field of design. I’ll demonstrate some of the ways I incorporate experiential learning activities in different classes and explain the planning, structure, applications, and adaptability of them. Finally I’ll cover the learning outcomes of these activities and how I apply them in industry. Adi Azulay is designer and technologist, his personal work focuses on creating objects that mediate communication and his professional interests are in designing complex systems for specialized applications. He’s worked at large tech companies, early stage startups, and in consulting. He's been teaching in HCDE since 2019 and the UW since 2017. Before transitioning to design, Adi was the managing partner of a wood and metal fabrication studio in Queens, NY. He is currently an Interaction Designer at Teague, and he’s earned a Master of Industrial Design degree from The Rhode Island School of Design and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of Visual Art. |
