Description | Q?rius (pronounced "curious") is an interactive and experimental learning space that brings the unique assets of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History — the science, researchers, and collections — out from behind the scenes.
School programs for grades K-5 are led by museum educators and designed to keep students on task for 45 minutes. Programs require a minimum of 15 students present to run, with a maximum of 30 students per program slot. If your group contains more than 30 students, you must register for a second slot.
Grades K-2 Program: Animal Adaptations Discover how animals adapt to their environment by looking closely and making observations of animal specimens from the Museum’s collections. Students use observations and background knowledge to make inferences about how those adaptations help the animal to survive in its environment. Grades 3-5 Program: Identifying Minerals What is a mineral? During this museum educator-led program, students will identify a variety of minerals by testing their luster, streak, hardness, color, and magnetism. Are you interested in an advanced version for your fifth-grade students? Please contact us to learn more about our Rocks and Minerals program.
From March to June 2025, the only program option for students in grades K through 2nd is Animal Adaptations. For students in grades 3rd through 5th, the only program option on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays is Identifying Minerals. If you are looking for Marine Ecosystems, please register for a Wednesday program.
