John Yau is a poet and fabulist, art reviewer and curator, and artist and publisher. In addition to his many reviews and individual pieces, he has published more than fifty book of poetry. Most recently he has published Tell It Slant (Omnidawn 2023), Joe Brainard: The Art of the Personal (Rizzoli 2022), and Please Wait By the Coatroom: Reconsidering Race and Identity in American Art (Black Sparrow Press, 2023). He started Black Square Editions in 1999 which continues into the present in its ambitious publication of poetry, fiction, essays, and translations. He was the arts editor of Brooklyn Rail for many years, which he left to start Hyperallergic Weekend Edition. He is the recipient of many awards, including New York Foundation for the Arts, a Guggenheim, a NEA, and Jackson Award from Poets & Writers) He has won acclaim for his poetry’s attentiveness to visual culture and linguistic surface. His work has been noted for “the interplay between language, sound, and image that allows Yau’s poetry to be both deep and mischievous".
